Adventures in Container Potatoes

Last year I tried to grow a few potatoes from sprouts off a potato from the store and the results were pretty lacklustre. I got a few small potatolings but for the amount of time I waited, I assumed it just wasn’t a viable option. This year I filled up the box with better dirt, started earlier, and didn’t even wait for sprouts to grow, I just planted a few small organic potatoes and mostly forgot about them.

This year, I’ve now had three crops: the first really only yielded a couple of small potatoes again but the second I got at least four 2-3 inch potatoes (I know, it’s not much but they are being grown in a box after all). And today I went out to pull some more up and much to my surprise had even more bigger potatoes!

I can’t wait until we have more space and can really branch out and grow different varieties and more successive crops. For now, I’m just pleased we’re able eat our little harvest.
