It’s a hard place and time to be a human with a brain and heart right now. And it’s been hard for a while. A question I have been asking myself (when I feel like I can form thoughts) is: what am I doing to be a part of the solutions? Last Ditch has always been about trying to find ways of taking action on food security and climate change but if all we’re doing is growing tomatoes in our backyard while the world burns down, what problem are we really solving?
As an antidote to despair and defeatism, I’ve added a new section to Last Ditch called ‘Get Involved.’ This will be an ongoing resource with some suggested social actions you can take, some activist resources, as well as a library of books, videos, and podcasts that go beyond food growing and into how we can effect change on some of our most wicked problems.
Over the spring and summer, I will also be finishing off the Grow Your Own Food page and resources. The Basic Plant Care and Pest & Disease Management videos will be first on my agenda, as they’ve languished half finished on my hard drive. I’ll also being some work on the Last Ditch Youtube Channel– adding some more urban permaculture videos, as well as playing around with other questions and topics I’m curious about. I’ll gladly take your suggestions! Sitting back and lamenting the state of the world is not a viable option. Rest, yes. But we cannot tune out and abandon those who have been in this fight for a long time. Get organized, get involved!
