Permaculture is a way of design thinking for long term sustainability. Many of its basic tenants are uncredited Indigenous and traditional approaches. Permaculture is one way of approaching things and generally I think it can be helpful. Like all systems, it should be critiqued and not taken as absolute truth.
Permaculture Design Principles:
Watch this explainer video of the permaculture principles, as explained by Andrew Millison, one of my instructors.
- Observe and interact.
- Catch and store energy
- Obtain a yield
- Apply self-regulation and accept feedback
- Use and value renewable resources and services
- Produce no waste
- Design from patterns to details
- Integrate rather than segregate
- Use small and slow solutions
- Use and value diversity
- Use edges and value the marginal
- Creatively use and respond to change
