Dog Days of Summer

Hello everyone! Just wanted to post a quick update as I’ve been quiet the past few weeks. This typically happens once growing season gets under way: there’s so much to do in the garden but so little time to write about it. I’ve also been taking some time away to visit the (very dry) Gulf Islands. I’ve been reading local author Des Kennedy’s book An Ecology of Enchantment which is a departure from the types of gardening adjacent books I read. I’ve also been making my way through Freedom Farmers: Agricultural Resistance and the Black Freedom Movement and thinking a lot about the limits of “self sufficiency.”

I hope the growing season is treating you well and would love to hear about what you’re growing and how you yourself are growing!

This year wwe have had a bumper crop of tomatoes and yellow peppers. A first. Zuchinni – and aubergine- steady – one or two a week. Same with cucumbers. I’m not getting a huge amount of time as I’m also halfway through a draft edit of my latest book. When I’m gardening I feel guilty that I’m not writing and when I’m not writing I feel guilty I’m not writing. LoL
